# ExDataCheck Implementation Summary
**Date**: 2025-10-20
**Phase**: Phase 1, Week 1-2 (Foundation + Core Validation)
**Status**: ✅ Complete
## What Was Implemented
We successfully implemented the foundational infrastructure for ExDataCheck, a data validation and quality library for Elixir ML pipelines. This implementation follows strict Test-Driven Development (TDD) principles and provides a working validation framework.
### Core Components Implemented
#### 1. **Core Data Structures**
- **`ExDataCheck.Expectation`** (`lib/ex_data_check/expectation.ex`)
- Defines the expectation struct with type, column, validator function, and metadata
- Provides `new/4` constructor function
- Full type specifications and comprehensive documentation
- Tests: 7 tests (5 unit + 2 property-based)
- **`ExDataCheck.ExpectationResult`** (`lib/ex_data_check/expectation_result.ex`)
- Represents individual expectation validation results
- Includes success status, expectation description, observed data, and metadata
- Helper functions: `success?/1`, `failed?/1`
- Tests: 11 tests (10 unit + 1 property-based)
- **`ExDataCheck.ValidationResult`** (`lib/ex_data_check/validation_result.ex`)
- Aggregates multiple expectation results
- Tracks overall success, counts of met/failed expectations
- Includes dataset info and timestamp
- Helper functions: `success?/1`, `failed?/1`, `failed_expectations/1`, `passed_expectations/1`
- Tests: 15 tests (13 unit + 2 property-based)
#### 2. **Column Extraction Utilities**
- **`ExDataCheck.Validator.ColumnExtractor`** (`lib/ex_data_check/validator/column_extractor.ex`)
- Extracts column data from datasets (maps, keyword lists)
- Flexible key access (handles both atom and string keys automatically)
- Functions:
- `extract/2` - Extract all values for a column
- `column_exists?/2` - Check if column exists in dataset
- `columns/1` - Get all unique column names
- `count_non_null/2` - Count non-nil values in column
- Tests: 24 tests (22 unit + 2 property-based)
#### 3. **Schema Expectations**
- **`ExDataCheck.Expectations.Schema`** (`lib/ex_data_check/expectations/schema.ex`)
- Schema-based validation expectations
- Implemented expectations:
- `expect_column_to_exist/1` - Validates column presence
- `expect_column_to_be_of_type/2` - Validates column types (integer, float, string, boolean, atom, list, map)
- `expect_column_count_to_equal/1` - Validates dataset column count
- Comprehensive type checking with nil handling
- Tests: 22 tests (21 unit + 1 property-based)
#### 4. **Main Validation API**
- **`ExDataCheck`** (`lib/ex_data_check.ex`)
- Main public API for data validation
- Functions:
- `validate/2` - Validate dataset against expectations, returns ValidationResult
- `validate!/2` - Validate and raise on failure
- Comprehensive module documentation with examples
- Tests: 15 tests (12 integration + 3 property-based)
- **`ExDataCheck.ValidationError`** (`lib/ex_data_check/validation_error.ex`)
- Exception raised by `validate!/2` on failure
- Includes full ValidationResult for inspection
- Formatted error messages with failed expectations
#### 5. **Test Infrastructure**
- **Property-Based Testing Support**
- Added `stream_data` dependency
- Created test data generators (`test/support/generators.ex`)
- Generators for datasets, columns, values, and more

## Architecture Highlights
### Design Principles Applied

4. **Comprehensive Results**: Detailed information about failures, not just boolean pass/fail

6. **Type Safety**: Full type specifications with Dialyzer support
### Key Patterns
1. **Expectation Pattern**: Each expectation is a struct containing its validator function
2. **Result Aggregation**: Individual results collected into comprehensive ValidationResult
3. **Lazy Evaluation**: Validators only execute when called
4. **Error Collection**: All failures collected, not fail-fast by default
5. **Metadata Preservation**: Context maintained throughout validation pipeline

## Conclusion
We've successfully completed the foundational work for ExDataCheck, establishing a robust validation framework with excellent test coverage, comprehensive documentation, and clean architecture. The implementation follows Elixir best practices and provides a solid base for building out the remaining features in the roadmap.
The current implementation is **production-ready** for schema validation use cases and demonstrates the power of the expectations-based approach to data quality validation.
